The story of Halina
Polish took Helena and produced Halina alongside it, and the two coexist. A separate Polish word halny names the warm wind that comes down off the Tatras, and some accounts connect the name to a word for calm, though the Helena derivation is better supported. Halina was very heavily used in Poland in the first half of the twentieth century and reaches American records with Polish families.

Not established
Helen's origin is genuinely unsettled; a Greek root for a torch is the most cited and a pre-Greek source is also argued. Polish Halina developed from Helena, and a separate Polish reading connects it to a word for calm weather.

The Max test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Halina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Max climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Max's path sketches the road Halina is walking now.
Halina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
