Where it comes from

The story of Elloise

Héloïse of the Paraclete wrote letters to Abelard in the twelfth century that have been read continuously ever since, and her name is the reason Eloise exists in French and English at all. It passed into English use in the Middle Ages and again in the nineteenth century. A mid-twentieth-century children's book about a girl living in a New York hotel gave it a second and quite different life in America, and the spellings multiplied afterwards.

Meaningscholars disagree

healthy and wide

The usual derivation takes Eloise from the Germanic Helewidis, joining elements meaning healthy or whole and wide. A second account connects it to Louise, from a different Germanic compound meaning famous warrior; the two names have influenced each other in French for centuries.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elloise went to 45 girls in 2025, but Eloise is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 4,296, which makes it the 57th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,332 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 374 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Elloise itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented record reaching back to one of the most famous correspondences in European history.
  • Ellie and Elle are both ready short forms, current and warm.
  • The sound is familiar in English and French alike.
What to consider
  • Eloise is the standard spelling and the doubled l will be corrected constantly.
  • The English and French pronunciations differ in stress entirely.
  • The children's book heroine is the first association for many Americans, and she is a handful.
