Our story of Lovina
Ours, offered as ours. Lovina belongs to a large group of American women's names from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that exist in the census and nowhere else — Melvina, Almina, Lovina, Ardelia. Some were inherited and some were made, and after four or five generations nobody can tell which was which. What can be said is that the -ina ending was doing real work in that period, and that a great many American families were making names rather than choosing them. Lovina is one of the results, and it has lasted.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established. Two candidates: Lavinia, a Latin name from Virgil, borne by the wife of Aeneas and connected to the ancient town of Lavinium; and a nineteenth-century American formation on the English word love with the -ina ending then in fashion. Both are plausible and neither is documented.

- It belongs to a whole generation of names that are being revived together.
- The middle vowel is unsettled between VY and VEE.
- Lavinia, Lovina and Lovinia are all close and get confused.
- There is no documented meaning, only two plausible parents.
