Our story of Aina
Short names with open vowels are the most likely of all names to be independently invented, because there are only so many ways to arrange two syllables of a, i and n. Aina is a clear example: Finland, Mallorca, Yorubaland and Japan each produced it from their own material, and the American birth record has no way to record which one a family meant. The 1901 American peak is almost certainly Scandinavian and Finnish, because that is who was arriving and settling in the upper Midwest in those years, and Aina is a genuine and ordinary Finnish and Swedish name of the period. The Catalan, Yoruba and Japanese bearers came later and separately. Four histories, one spelling, and a record that cannot tell them apart.

Depends entirely on the language
Finnish and Swedish Aina is generally connected to a Norse element meaning ever or always, or treated as a form of Aino, a figure in the Kalevala. Catalan Aina is the Mallorcan form of Anna, from Hebrew Ḥannāh, grace. Yoruba Ainá is given to a child born with the umbilical cord around the neck. Japanese Aina is written with kanji whose meanings vary. Four separate readings, all settled within their own language and none applying to the others.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
