Buffalo Bill invented how the world pictures the American West. His Wild West show toured Europe from 1887, played for Queen Victoria, and ran for thirty years — so the cowboys, the war bonnets and the stagecoach chase are a theatrical production's image, not a historical one.

Where it comes from

The story of Codie

Buffalo Bill's Wild West opened in 1883 and was touring Europe within four years. It presented a fixed repertoire — a buffalo hunt, an attack on the Deadwood stage, Custer's Last Stand — with genuine participants including Sitting Bull for one season and Annie Oakley for many. Audiences in London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona took it as documentary. The show's imagery went into European and American popular culture, into dime novels and then into film, and it is the direct ancestor of the western as a genre. The West it depicted was already over. Cody as a given name rose from the 1950s with the western's screen dominance; the Codie spelling peaks in 1991.

Irish "descendant of Cuidightheach" — a helpful one

Cody is from Ó Cuidighthigh, a descendant of Cuidightheach, from a word meaning helpful or a helper. The derivation is reasonably well supported but not certain. Codie is an American respelling; by the usual convention the -ie spelling reads as feminine, though it is used for both sexes. The name's American career is downstream of William F. Cody.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Codie went to 10 boys in 2025, but Kodie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 904th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,775 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 71,170 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Codie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • The Irish surname behind it has a documented meaning.
  • It works for either sex without adjustment.
What to consider
  • Cody is the standard spelling and will be substituted.
  • The -ie spelling reads as feminine to many Americans.
  • The early-1990s peak dates a bearer fairly clearly.
