The likeliest source is Irish O Cuidighthigh, from cuidightheach, 'helper, one who gives assistance'. A second route runs through Mac Oda, from the Germanic Odo. Both were anglicized as Cody. The -ie ending is a diminutive marker and carries nothing lexical; the K is an American respelling. The Irish derivation is the standard one and is not seriously disputed.
