The story of Rosalio
The Church's usual method with Roman festivals was absorption rather than suppression, and the rosalia is a clear case: the practice of decorating graves with roses continued, attached to Christian commemoration of the dead, and the word survived into the calendar. Santa Rosalia of Palermo, a twelfth-century hermit whose remains were carried through the city during the plague of 1624, made the name central in Sicily, where her festival is still the largest of the year. From Sicily and Spain the name traveled to Mexico, and the masculine Rosalio became ordinary there. The American figures peak in 1928, with Mexican-American families.
Meaning
Latin "of the roses", from the Roman rose festival
From Latin rosa, a rose, through rosalia, the festival of roses. The Roman rosalia or dies rosationis was a spring observance at which graves were adorned with roses, attested across the empire from the first century. The masculine name Rosalio is formed from the feminine Rosalia. It should not be confused with Rosario, which is the rosary, a different word from the same flower.
