The story of Benjiman
Benjamin is the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons and the ancestor of one of the tribes, and the name reached English through the Reformation, becoming a Puritan and then a general favorite. Nineteenth-century American registers carry a set of phonetic respellings of common biblical names — Benjiman, Elijah as Elijer, Isaac as Isaack — recording pronunciation rather than tradition. Benjiman peaked around 1890.
Meaning
son of the right hand
From the Hebrew Binyamin — ben, 'son', and yamin, 'right hand'. Genesis has the mother name him Ben-Oni, 'son of my sorrow', as she dies, and the father rename him Binyamin. The right hand carried senses of favor, strength and the south, and all three have been read into it.
