Where it comes from

The story of Junius

Lucius Junius Brutus expelled the last king of Rome and founded the republic, and Marcus Junius Brutus killed Caesar five centuries later. The name reached English through classical education, and American families of the nineteenth century used it as part of a broad revival of Roman names. Junius peaked around 1885.

of Juno

From the Roman family name Junius, generally derived from the goddess Juno, whose own name may relate to a root meaning 'young' or 'vital force'. The month Iunius shares the derivation. The Junii were a major republican family; the reading is accepted though Juno's own etymology is not settled.

Junius sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 132 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two consequential figures of Roman history carry the family name.
  • The connection to a month is a genuinely rare thing for a name to have.
  • It belongs to a documented nineteenth-century American classical revival.
What to consider
  • Juno's own etymology is not settled.
  • Three syllables and a distinctly antique look.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
