The story of Landis
The Swiss Mennonite and Amish migration to Pennsylvania brought a distinctive set of surnames that have stayed unusually intact, partly because the communities married within themselves for generations. Landis is one of the most common of them in Lancaster County. Its move into given-name use follows the ordinary American surname pattern and peaked in 1907; the twentieth-century judge and baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis gave the name a period of wider visibility.

From a Germanic element meaning land or territory
Landis is generally taken as a Swiss and South German surname from land, with a genitive or diminutive ending, so of the land or belonging to the land. A derivation from a personal name Lando, itself from the same element, is equally possible. Both readings return to land; neither is settled as the mechanism.
