Our story of Orie
The naming vocabulary of the American South between about 1870 and 1910 has never been properly cataloged, and it deserves to be. It has a small parts inventory — the openings O-, El-, Ar-, Ver-; the middles -c-, -z-, -l-; the endings -ie, -a, -us — and it produces hundreds of names that appear in the census and in no dictionary: Ocie, Orie, Elzie, Classie, Vertie, Ardelia, Dovie, Zelma. They were not respellings of anything and they were not borrowed. They were made, at home, by families whose naming had no reference book in it at all. That makes the 1880s the closest historical parallel to the 1990s, and it is worth saying because the modern coinage is usually treated as unprecedented. It is not; it is a revival of a practice that America has had all along.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No etymology is established. Proposed parents include Orville, Orion, Oral and Aurelius, and the name may equally be a free formation from the O- opening and the -ie ending, both of which were highly productive in that period. Orie was used for both sexes, which argues against derivation from any single longer name.
Pronouncing Orie
OR-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first. Some families gave OH-ree with a fully rounded first vowel. Both are recorded and neither is more correct.
