Roark
Masculine
Roark is an Irish surname, and its American peak in 1958 sits fifteen years after Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead gave its architect hero the name Howard Roark. The book sold steadily and enormously through the 1950s, and the birth record responds. Behind the surname is a personal name that may be Norse.

The story of Roark
The O Rourkes were kings of Breifne in what is now Leitrim and Cavan, and their name appears throughout the Irish annals; Tiernan O'Rourke's quarrel with Diarmait Mac Murchada is traditionally connected to the Norman invasion of 1169. The surname anglicized as O'Rourke, Rourke and Roark, and Irish emigration brought it to America in very large numbers. Its use as a given name is twentieth-century and small. Ayn Rand's 1943 novel made the surname a byword for uncompromising individualism, and the 1949 film kept it visible; the naming record follows.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Irish O Ruairc is the descendant of Ruarc, a personal name of uncertain origin. The most cited proposal derives it from Old Norse Hrothrekr — the same name as Roderick, from hrod, 'fame', and ric, 'ruler' — brought to Ireland by Viking settlers. That derivation is plausible and not demonstrated, and an independent Irish origin is also proposed. The surname is certain; the personal name behind it is not.

The Kelso test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Roark's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kelso climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kelso's path sketches the road Roark is walking now.
Roark sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
