Marquan
Masculine
Marquan ends in a spelling that American naming invented for a purpose. The -quan terminal appears in Daquan, Rayquan, Marquan and Dashquan, and it is a way of writing a kw sound that no English word ends in. That is unusual: most naming spellings borrow from somewhere, and this one had to be built. Its peak is 1994.

Our story of Marquan
The qu spelling is worth pausing on. English uses q only before u, and almost never at the end of a word — the letter is a Latin inheritance that does nothing English could not do with kw or k. That makes it rare, and rareness is exactly what a naming element needs. When American naming began building names on a -kwahn sound in the 1980s, it could have written -kwan, and sometimes did; but -quan looked more substantial, more like a real word, and it won. The result is a family of names using a letter combination that occurs nowhere else in English in that position. That is genuine orthographic innovation, and it is worth recognizing as such rather than treating as an error.

No documented source. The Mar- front may come from Marcus or Marquis, both of which have real ancestries — Marcus from the Roman gens name connected to Mars, Marquis from the French noble title, itself from a word for a border march. The -quan ending has no lexical content and no source language; it is an American spelling of a sound. So one half has candidates and the other has none.

Two syllables, stress at the end, with the qu said as kw. The spelling is unambiguous once heard, and English readers produce it correctly despite the unusual letter combination.

The Rosalio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marquan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosalio climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosalio's path sketches the road Marquan is walking now.
Marquan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
