Where it comes from

The story of Camiya

Roman ritual required assistants who were freeborn, of unblemished body, and had both parents living, and those children were the camilli and camillae. The word is probably not Latin in origin and may be Etruscan, like much of Roman religious vocabulary. Virgil then took the name for one of the most memorable figures in the Aeneid: Camilla, queen of the Volsci, raised in the woods by her exiled father, dedicated to Diana, and so fast that she could run across water without wetting her feet and over standing corn without breaking the stalks. She fights and dies in the war against Aeneas. Pope later borrowed the image for a line about meter in verse, which is how many English readers first meet her, and the name entered European use from the poem rather than from the ritual.

Latin camillus, an attendant at a sacrifice

Camiya is an American formation built on Cami, from Camille or Camila, from the Roman family name Camillus. A camillus was a freeborn boy attending a priest at a sacrifice, and camilla the female equivalent; the word may be Etruscan. The -iya ending is American and carries no meaning. The peak is 2010.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
