The -iyah ending is the clearest recent American case. It arrived attached to a complete Arabic word, spread on the strength of one performer's visibility, and then detached — so that by about 2005 an American parent could take almost any first syllable and produce a name that sounded current, related to something, and entirely new. Kamyah is that operation performed on Ka-. The name is not descended from Aaliyah in the way a daughter is descended from a mother; it is descended in the way a word is descended from a suffix. That is a real kind of ancestry, and it is the one this name has.
