Roseline
Feminine · “Germanic 'horse' and 'soft”
Roseline is the French spelling of the name English speakers know as Rosalind or Rosaline, and it carries a small saint with it: Roseline de Villeneuve, a thirteenth-century Carthusian prioress in Provence whose chapel still stands. American families used it steadily through the 1920s, when Rose compounds of every kind were at their height, and the -line ending places it beside Caroline, Madeline and Emmeline rather than beside plain Rose.

From Hrosalind to Roseline
The story of Roseline
Hrosalind moved with Germanic speakers into Spain, where the Visigoths left it, and into France. Medieval Provence produced the saint who carries the French form: Roseline de Villeneuve (c. 1263-1329), prioress of the charterhouse of Celle-Roubaud, whose chapel near Les Arcs is still a pilgrimage site. England took the name in its Rosalind and Rosaline spellings, which Shakespeare used twice within a few years, in As You Like It and Love's Labour's Lost. Roseline itself entered American birth records with French-speaking families and rode the broad early-twentieth-century enthusiasm for Rose compounds.

Germanic 'horse' and 'soft, tender' — later re-heard as 'rose'
The older layer is Germanic: Hrosalind, from hros 'horse' and lind 'soft, flexible' — the word behind linden wood and the light shields made from it. Romance speakers heard Latin rosa in the first syllable and the name was quietly re-understood as a flower word; the French spelling with its clean Rose- front completes that reading. Both layers are genuine, which is why reference works list the name twice, once under the horse and once under the rose.

Pronouncing Roseline
ROH-zuh-leen
The French-derived saying puts a long e in the final syllable. Readers who see Rose plus -line say ROH-zuh-lyne instead, rhyming the ending with 'line'. Both circulate in American use and neither is wrong; the spelling does not settle it, so bearers usually say which they mean once and let it stick.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Margert test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Roseline's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Margert climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Margert's path sketches the road Roseline is walking now.

The trade-off
- Rose, Rosie, Lina and Ro are all available, so a four-syllable name has several exits.
- The spelling is transparent to anyone who can read Rose and -line, which makes it easier over the phone than Rosalind.
- It is old enough to have a documented saint and a Shakespearean cousin without ever having been common enough to date a bearer to one decade.
- Two endings circulate, -leen and -lyne, and the spelling gives no clue which is meant.
- First hearings often land on Rosalind or Roseanne, and get corrected in writing.
- Rose names are numerous again, so a Roseline will share rooms with Rosalie, Rosalind and Rosemary.
