Loyal
Feminine · “faithful”

Loyal is one of the plainest virtue names in American use: the adjective itself, unaltered, given as a name. It has a longer history than it looks — nineteenth-century American records carry Loyal on boys, often in families with a taste for Justice, Truman and Freeborn — and it returned on girls in the 2010s alongside Legend, True and Royal, in a decade that liked nouns and abstractions on birth certificates.

Loyal first appears in US birth records in 1916 — 109 years ago. The typical Loyal is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 400 people named Loyal are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Loyal
Virtue naming is an old English-language habit with a specific origin: sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Protestant families who preferred a quality to a saint, and produced Faith, Prudence, Mercy, Temperance and Constance. That practice crossed the Atlantic and stayed active in rural America long after it faded in England, which is where the nineteenth-century Loyals come from — usually boys, usually in the Midwest and New England. The modern revival is a separate event: from about 2010 American parents began using nouns of standing and worth for both sexes, and Loyal reappeared on the girls' list beside Legend, Royal, True and Justice, at a scale it had never previously had.
Meaning
faithful; true to a bond or an obligation
The word arrives through Old French loial and ultimately from Latin legalis, 'of the law' — the same root as legal and legitimate. English absorbed loyal in the sixteenth century with its political sense first (loyal to a crown), and the personal sense of steadfastness in friendship came afterwards. Nothing about the etymology is contested; the name simply is the word.

The Jalene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Loyal's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jalene climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jalene's path sketches the road Loyal is walking now.
Loyal sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It never needs to be spelled: the name is a word every English speaker already writes.
- It reads the same on a girl or a boy, which suits families who want a name without a built-in sex signal.
- It has a documented nineteenth-century American history, so it is a revival rather than an invention.
- A virtue name states a standard the bearer did not choose, which some adults find heavier than others.
- Because it is an everyday adjective, the name appears inside ordinary sentences and will be misread as one.
- Its earlier American use was almost entirely male, which some records and forms still assume.
