English took loyal from French in the sixteenth century, and behind the French sits Latin legalis — lawful. English already had the older, shorter form leal, still heard in Scots, before the fuller loyal arrived and took over. Turning such words into given names is an English-speaking habit with deep roots: the Puritan naming tradition gave children Patience, Prudence, Mercy and Temperance, and later American parents kept the practice going with newer virtues. Loyal joined that group late and, unlike most of it, went chiefly to boys.
