Where it comes from

The story of Missy

Miss began as a shortened mistress in the seventeenth century, first for a young unmarried woman and then as the standard title. From it English produced missy, an affectionate and sometimes mock-scolding way to address a girl — the register of 'now listen here, missy'. American families began entering it as a given name in the nineteenth century, and it climbed steadily until the 1960s, when the fashion for informal-sounding names for girls was at its widest. The rapper and producer Missy Elliott, whose given name is Melissa, is the best-known bearer and shows the second path in action: the pet form doing the public work while the long name stays on documents.

Meaning

affectionate form of 'miss'; also short for Melissa

Two feeder paths, both documented and both ordinary. The word missy is a familiar form of address for a girl, recorded in English from the eighteenth century, built on miss, which is itself a clipping of mistress. Separately, Missy has long served as a spoken short form of Melissa and occasionally of Melinda, Millicent or Artemisia. Which one a particular bearer descends from is a family fact rather than an etymological one.

Missy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1967, with 303 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can spell it after hearing it once, which is unusual for a name of this shape.
  • It carries an unmistakable warmth, and needs no nickname of its own.
  • It works as a standalone name or as the everyday form of Melissa, so a family can decide later which it is.
What to consider
  • As a word, missy is used to scold as well as to endear, and that register comes with the name.
  • The -y ending reads as informal on documents where a longer form would be expected.
  • Its statistical shape is very much mid-century, so it dates a bearer more than most short names do.
