Treva
Feminine · “great settlement”
Treva is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 9,664 girls against 11 boys since 1880.
Trevor is a big settlement. The Welsh joins tref, a homestead or town, to mawr, great — so the name describes a substantial place rather than a small one, which is the opposite of what most place-names manage. Treva is the feminine, and it was made in America: Wales has no such name and never did.

The story of Treva
Trevor is a Welsh place name and then a surname, and it became a widely used English and American first name in the twentieth century. Making a woman's name by adding -a to a man's is an English-language habit rather than a Welsh one, and it produced Treva, Trevina and Trevonne. Treva appears in American records from 1886 — well before Trevor itself was common here — which suggests some of it arrived by another road entirely, possibly as a short form of a longer name now forgotten.
Meaning
great settlement
From the Welsh tref, a homestead, town or settlement, and mawr, great or large. Tref is one of the most common elements in Welsh place names, as its Cornish cousin tre is in Cornwall. The -a ending on this name is an American addition and carries no meaning.

The Rosia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Treva's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosia climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosia's path sketches the road Treva is walking now.
Treva sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Welsh elements behind it are genuine and both are still living words.
- Trev and Eva are both usable and belong to different worlds.
- Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
- It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
- The first vowel is unsettled, so the name arrives two ways.
- It belongs to an older American generation and carries that flavor.
- Wales has no such name, so the Welsh connection is at one remove.
