Where it comes from

The story of Rosia

The rose names were among the most heavily built-on in nineteenth-century America. Rosa, Rose and Rosie were all in ordinary use, and families extended them freely: Rosetta, Rosella, Rosina, Rosanna, Rosalie and Rosia all appear in the earliest federal records, most of them without any European model behind them. Rosia is one of the plainest of these constructions and one of the least traceable. Italian has Rosa and Rosina, Spanish has Rosa and Rosita, and neither has this. It was made here, from pieces that were already lying about, and it belongs to the same generation of naming as Louvenia and Eldora.

Meaning

Whichever road the name took, the flower is behind it. The ending adds nothing but length, and it is not a Latin ending despite looking like one.

Rosia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 91 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Rosia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
