The story of Rosina
Rosa and its diminutives have been ordinary in Italy for centuries, and Rosina is among the most used. Its most famous bearer is fictional: Rosina is the ward in Beaumarchais's Barber of Seville and in Rossini's opera of 1816, one of the great comic soprano roles. Italian migration brought the name to America in quantity, and its peak in 1890 sits at the beginning of that wave rather than at its height, which suggests earlier arrivals as well; it declined after 1920 as the second generation chose Rose and Rosemary.

Rose
Rosa is the Latin word for the flower, and Rosina is its Italian diminutive with the -ina ending. The reading through the flower is standard. A complication is that the medieval name Rohese, from Germanic elements meaning fame and kind, fed into the same family, so some Rose names descend from that rather than from the flower; the two have merged beyond separating.
