Where it comes from

The story of Andi

Diminutive endings carry sex differently in different languages, and the mismatches are systematic. German uses -i freely for men — Andi, Rudi, Fritzi, Michi, Uli — where American English hears -i as female. English -y and -ie split by convention, with -ie leaning female. Italian -a is masculine in Andrea and Luca and feminine almost everywhere in English. The result is that a German Andi arriving in America is read as a woman on paper, and an American Andi in Germany as a man. Neither reading is wrong; each is a local rule applied to a name that has no international one. The American male figures for Andi peak in 2005.

Meaning

Greek "manly, of a man"

From andreios, manly, from anēr, andros, a man. Andi is a clip of Andreas in German, of Andrew in English, and of Andrea in both — where Andrea is masculine in Italian and feminine in English and German. Andi is also a standard men's name in Albania and Indonesia. The -i ending reads as feminine in American English and as informal-masculine in German.

Andi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 55 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Andi went to 10 boys in 2025, but Andy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 534, which makes it the 492nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 7,187 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 3,199 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Andi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
