Andi
Feminine · “manly”

Andi is the spoken end of Andrea and Andreas, names built on the Greek andros, "man" — the root behind the apostle Andrew and behind a family of names that has crossed most of Europe. Written with the -i, it belongs to a whole set of English short forms that took that ending for girls: Jodi, Toni, Randi. Two light beats, and nothing in it needs explaining out loud.

The story of Andi
Andreas was a common Greek name long before it became a Christian one, formed from andros, the genitive of anēr, "man". The apostle Andrew carried it across Christendom, and it settled into nearly every European language: Andreas in German and Greek, André in French, Andrés in Spanish, Andrea in Italian — where it stayed a man's name. English took Andrea as a woman's name instead, and English speakers did to it what they do to most three-syllable names: cut it to two. The -i spelling arrived with a broad twentieth-century habit of writing girls' short forms that way, alongside Jodi, Toni and Randi.
Meaning
manly, brave — inherited from Andrea and Andreas, from Greek anēr, andros "man"
The Greek root is not in doubt. What varies is the parent name: Andi serves as a short form of Andrea most often, but also of Alexandria, Andressa and Miranda. Separately, in Indonesia, Andi is a name in its own right, connected to a hereditary title among the Bugis of South Sulawesi — an unrelated line that happens to share the spelling.

The Daniel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Andi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Daniel climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Daniel's path sketches the road Andi is walking now.
Andi is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Already short, so there is no nickname to negotiate later; it is the everyday form from day one.
- Pronounced correctly on sight by almost anyone, since it sounds exactly like the long-familiar Andy.
- Can stand alone or sit behind a longer legal name — Andrea, Alexandria, Miranda all shorten to it.
- The Andrea–Andreas family exists in German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, French and Hungarian, so relatives abroad will recognize the root.
- Andi, Andie and Andy will be confused for life. Expect to spell it out on forms, in emails and over the phone, every time.
- The sound is shared with the traditionally male Andy, and in German-speaking countries and Albania, Andi itself is a man's name. On paper, strangers may guess wrong.
- It is climbing quickly rather than sitting steady, and names that rise fast tend to mark a birth cohort more sharply than names that have held one level for a century.
- Some parents find a two-syllable clipped form reads casually on a diploma or a résumé; pairing it with a longer given name on documents is the usual answer.
