Gabrielle is the French feminine of Gabriel, the name of the archangel who speaks in the Book of Daniel and again in Luke's gospel — a name that has been in continuous use across Europe for well over a thousand years. In English it lands on the last syllable, gab-ree-ELL, which gives it a lift at the end that its cousins Gabriela and Gabriella settle differently. It has been on American record for more than a century and still charts in France.

The story of Gabrielle
The root name belongs to Hebrew scripture: Gavri'el appears in the Book of Daniel as the figure who explains visions, and in Luke's gospel as the messenger who comes to Mary. Through the Greek and Latin of the Bible the name spread across Christian Europe, and it is honored in Islam as well, as Jibril. France produced the feminine Gabrielle, which was borne at the French court and has stayed in steady use there ever since. English speakers took the French form largely intact — spelling, stress and all — and it has been on American record since the nineteenth century.
Meaning

From Hebrew Gavri'el, joining gever, "strong man," with El, "God." The same elements are sometimes rendered "man of God" or "strength of God," but all point the same way.

The trade-off
- A spelling that English speakers already read correctly on sight, with no ambiguity about how it is said.
- Several long-established short forms — Gabby, Brie, Elle, Gigi — so the child has real choices without inventing anything.
- Recognized in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish and Hebrew in near-identical forms, which travels well.
- An unbroken written record going back to the Hebrew scriptures, by way of Greek, Latin and French.
- Gabriela, Gabriella and Gabrielle are constantly mistaken for one another. Expect to spell it out, and expect mail addressed to the other two.
- Gabby, by far the most common short form, is also an ordinary English adjective meaning talkative. Most people never make the connection, but a few will make the joke.
- The name has been stepping back from its high point for a while, which means it reads as familiar to adults and fresh in a classroom — a combination some parents want and others don't.
