Indie is the English word for independent, clipped short the way English likes to clip things — the same shortening that put the word on record-shop shelves. It arrives by a second road too, as the pet form of India, Indiana and Indigo, names that trace back through Greek to the river Sanskrit called Sindhu. Two light syllables, closing on the same -ie ending that Sadie and Josie close on.

Indie first appears in US birth records in 1959 — 66 years ago. The typical Indie is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 4,400 people named Indie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Indie

The word came first: 'indie' was trade shorthand for independent film companies and independent record labels through the middle of the twentieth century, and by the 1980s it named a whole strand of British and American guitar music. Alongside that, India had been used as an English given name since the nineteenth century, taken from the country, whose name reaches English through Latin and Greek from the Indus river — Sanskrit Sindhu, simply 'river'. Indie sits where those two lines cross, sometimes written on a birth certificate in full, sometimes standing in for India, Indiana or Indigo. It has appeared in American records for decades, but the wave carrying it now is a recent one.

Meaningscholars disagree

Either a short form of India / Indiana / Indigo, or the English word 'indie', from 'independent'

Two readings genuinely compete, and most families who use it have one or the other in mind. As a nickname, it borrows the meaning of India — from Greek India, named for the Indus, from Sanskrit Sindhu, 'river'. As a word, 'indie' is simply 'independent' cut down to two syllables. Nothing forces a choice between them.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way an ordinary English word is spelled, so most people can write it after hearing it once.
  • Short and unambiguous to say — two syllables, no silent letters, no regional variation in how it is pronounced.
  • Can sit on the birth certificate alone or as the short form of India, Indiana or Indigo, which leaves a longer name available later.
  • Travels easily among English-speaking countries, where the underlying word carries the same sense.
What to consider
  • Indi and Indy are both in real use, so expect to spell it out fairly often, even though the sound is never in doubt.
  • The word 'indie' has already shifted meaning more than once — film trade, record labels, a music genre, a general shorthand for small and unaffiliated. It will keep shifting, and the name carries whatever it means at the time.
  • The wave is very recent, so nearly everyone with this name is still a child. There is little evidence yet of how it wears on an adult — which is true of every name at this stage, and stops being true quickly.
  • There is no built-in nickname to fall back on; Indie is already the short version.
