The story of Destiny
The word reached English from French in the fourteenth century, and Chaucer put it to work at once: in the Knight's Tale 'the destinee, ministre general' carries out 'the purveiaunce that God hath seyn biforn.' English Puritans had long given daughters virtue words such as Faith and Hope, but Destiny came much later, as an American name of the twentieth century. Its best-known bearer set it aside: the singer and actress Miley Cyrus was born Destiny Hope Cyrus and later made her childhood nickname her legal name.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Destiny's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ruby climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- An everyday English word, so it is spelled and said correctly almost everywhere.
- Three short syllables with a ready short form, Des.
- The word has six centuries of English literature behind it, from Chaucer on.
- Because it is a common noun, the meaning travels into every introduction, and some people will comment on it.
- It was given widely for a stretch of recent years, so it reads as a name of that period rather than an ageless one.
- A few boys are recorded with it. With no masculine tradition behind the word, a boy called Destiny will be read as a girl on most forms.
