Azaria
Feminine · “God has helped”
Azaria is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 7,603 girls against 224 boys since 1880.
Azaria carries one of the oldest sentences in the Hebrew Bible inside it: a name built from the verb "to help" and a syllable of the divine name. In English it settles into four soft beats that end the way Maria and Julia end, and it arrives with a set of ready-made short forms already in use. It is a familiar word to anyone who knows the book of Daniel, yet it turns up rarely enough in American classrooms to belong to one child at a time.
How old is the name Azaria?
Azaria first appears in US birth records in 1988 — 37 years ago. The typical Azaria is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 7,500 people named Azaria are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Azaria
The parent name is Hebrew Azaryah, borne in the Hebrew Bible by more than twenty men, among them the young exile in the book of Daniel whose Babylonian name was Abednego, and a king of Judah. Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures rendered it Azarias, and from there it passed into Latin and into English Bibles as Azariah, where it was picked up by Puritan and later Protestant families who preferred scriptural names to saints' names. Azaria is the form that ends in the vowel English hears as feminine — the ending of Maria, Sophia, Julia — and it is under that spelling that the name has been given to American girls in recent decades, a young wave rather than a revival of anything older.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Azaria went to 453 girls in 2025, but Azariah, Azariyah and Azaryah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,046, which makes it the 301st most-given girls’ name of the year — 337 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,537 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 3,548 for Azaria itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Taya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Azaria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Taya climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Taya's path sketches the road Azaria is walking now.
Azaria is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and undisputed — "God has helped" — which is unusual for a name this uncommon in the US.
- A documented line running from the Hebrew Bible through Greek and Latin into English, so the name is ancient even where the spelling is recent.
- Several short forms already in circulation — Zaria, Ria, Azzy, Zia — none of which had to be invented.
- Recognizable in Hebrew, Greek, Spanish and Russian dress, so it travels without becoming unpronounceable.
- Rare enough in American schools that a child is unlikely to share it, while the sound pattern is completely familiar.
- It sits in a crowded neighborhood of similar spellings — Azariah, Azzaria, Zaria, Azalea — so expect to repeat and spell it, and expect the occasional Azariah on a form.
- In the Bible every bearer of the name is male, and Azariah is still given to boys in English. Azaria with the -a ending reads as a girl's name in US records, but the older form may prompt a question now and then.
- Stress can wander between uh-ZAR-ee-uh and ah-zah-REE-ah; deciding early which one your family uses saves some friction later.
- In Australia and New Zealand the name is closely tied to the Azaria Chamberlain case of 1980, which was heavily reported there for years — worth knowing if you have family or ties in that part of the world.
