Violeta is the Spanish, Romanian and Lithuanian shape of the violet — the same small flower that gave Latin its word *viola* and Europe one of its most durable flower names. It has been on American records for more than a century, quietly, and is climbing again now. Said in Spanish it lands on that open third syllable, vee-oh-LEH-tah, with every vowel sounded.

The story of Violeta
The root is the Latin viola, the name of the flower itself, which passed into the Romance languages and became a personal name — Italian Violetta, French Violette, Spanish and Romanian Violeta. Flower names spread widely across Europe and Britain in the nineteenth century, and Violeta traveled its own road through Spanish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Lithuanian, where it has been standard for generations. Verdi's La traviata, first staged in 1853, gave the Italian form Violetta a place on opera stages worldwide. In the United States the spelling with a single t and no final vowel change arrived largely through Spanish-speaking families, which is why it remains best represented in Texas, California and Florida.

The trade-off
