Britni
Feminine · “from Brittany”
Brittany was named by Britons who fled across the Channel. When Saxons took over the island in the fifth and sixth centuries, British families crossed to Armorica in such numbers that the region was renamed Little Britain — which is why a corner of France carries the name of an island it is not part of, and why the language spoken there is a cousin of Welsh.

The story of Britni
The migration was large enough to change a map. Breton is still spoken in western Brittany and is closely related to Welsh and Cornish — not to French, and not to Gaulish, which had already gone. So the name records an early medieval refugee movement that most people using it have never heard of. It became an American given name in the twentieth century by the usual route, as a place name that sounded like a woman's name, and then produced Brittani, Britney, Brittny and Britni.
Meaning
from Brittany
Brittany is the English name of the French region, from Latin Britannia, from Britanni — what the Romans called the people of the island. The name's route is documented at every step. What is not settled is what Britanni itself meant; a Celtic word for a painted or tattooed people is the usual proposal and is not demonstrated. Britni is a shortened American spelling that keeps the sound and drops three letters.
