Yamilex
Feminine · “beautiful”
The -ex ending is a genuinely new naming device. It does not come from Spanish, it does not come from Nahuatl, and it does not come from English; it arrived in Latin American naming in the 1990s and has generated Yamilex, Yaritzex, Dailex and a dozen more, and nobody has documented where it came from.

Our story of Yamilex
New naming suffixes are rarer than they look, and most turn out on inspection to be borrowed from an existing name. The -ex of recent Latin American naming does not: it does not appear in Spanish word formation, it is not a Nahuatl ending despite looking like one to Spanish eyes, and it has no English model. What it does have is a strong visual character, ending a woman's name on a hard consonant, which almost nothing else in Spanish does. That is probably enough to explain it. Yamilex takes an Arabic-derived name already established in Mexican Spanish and applies the device, and its best year in United States records is 1996, which is early in the ending's run.

beautiful, from an Arabic root
The Yamile behind this name is the Spanish rendering of Arabic Jamila, beautiful, from the root j-m-l, which entered Mexican and Caribbean Spanish through Lebanese and Syrian migration. The -ex ending has no known source and carries no meaning. Whether Yamilex is Yamile plus that ending, or an independent coinage, cannot be settled.

The Jenni test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yamilex's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenni climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenni's path sketches the road Yamilex is walking now.
Yamilex sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
