Jenni
Feminine · “Cornish Jennifer”
There is a moment in the American record when parents stopped registering the long name and started registering the nickname, and the data can date it. Jennifer was the number one girls' name of the 1970s. Jenni, which nobody had put on a birth certificate before, peaks in 1972, at the front of that wave rather than behind it.

The story of Jenni
Registering a short form as the legal name is a twentieth-century American habit and it accelerated sharply in the 1960s. Before that, Jenny, Kitty, Sally and Betsy were what a child was called, while the certificate said Jane, Katherine, Sarah or Elizabeth. The shift shows up as an entire family of clipped names entering the data at once, and Jenni belongs to a particular subgroup within it, the ones that chose -i over -y or -ie. That choice is datable almost to the year: Toni, Randi, Terri, Lori, Jodi and Jenni all cluster in the 1960s and 1970s, and the -i ending falls out of use afterwards. It is one of the more reliable dating marks in American naming, more reliable than the name itself.
Meaning
Cornish Jennifer, from Welsh Gwenhwyfar
Jenni is a short form of Jennifer, which is the Cornish form of the Welsh Gwenhwyfar, the name of Arthur's queen in the medieval romances and the source of English Guinevere. The elements are gwen, white or fair or blessed, and a second element usually read as smooth or soft, though that half is less certain than the first. Jenni is also an independent given name in Finland.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Willene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Willene climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Willene's path sketches the road Jenni is walking now.
Jenni sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
