The story of Werner
Germanic tribal names occasionally survive in personal names after the tribes themselves are gone. The Warini are attested by Tacitus around AD 98 among the peoples of the north, appear again in a sixth-century law code associated with the Thuringians, and are not heard of afterwards; they were presumably absorbed into their neighbors, as most small tribes were. Werner became a common German name in the Middle Ages and remains one. Comparable cases include Frank, from the Franks, and the surname Sachs, from the Saxons. The American figures for Werner peak in 1930, with German immigration.

Germanic "warrior of the Warini" or "defending warrior"
From Warinheri, combining warin — either the tribal name of the Warini or an element meaning to defend or guard — with heri, an army or warrior. The tribal reading is widely cited and not certain. The Warini or Varini appear in Tacitus's Germania and in a later law code, the Lex Thuringorum, and then disappear from the record.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Werner's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gaetano climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gaetano's path sketches the road Werner is walking now.
Werner sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
