The story of Tori
The torii is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and it is functionally a threshold. Two uprights and two crosspieces, traditionally vermilion, standing at the approach to a shrine, often several in sequence along a path, and famously in their thousands at Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. There is no wall, no gate leaf and nothing to keep out; what it marks is a change of status in the ground beyond it. The etymology is argued: the standard explanation reads the characters as bird perch, and connects it to a myth in which birds were made to call to draw the sun goddess out of her cave, while other accounts derive it from a verb for passing through or from continental sources. The structure predates its earliest documentation, which is why the question is open.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Tori's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Giacomo climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Giacomo's path sketches the road Tori is walking now.
