Tori
Feminine · Latin roots · “victory”
Tori is given to both — 37,134 girls and 1,214 boys since 1880. See Tori as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Tori is the tail end of Victoria, clipped off and sent out on its own — the same trick that turned Elizabeth into Beth and Susanna into Sue. Two syllables, an open first vowel and a bright ending, it is one of those short forms that stopped needing its parent name. It has been given as a name in its own right in America for several generations now, and it still reads instantly to almost anyone who hears it.

Where it comes from
From victoria (Latin, "victory") to Tori
The story of Tori
Victoria began as an ordinary Latin noun, victoria, victory, and served as the name of the Roman goddess who personified it before it was ever a given name. It spread through the English-speaking world during the long reign of Queen Victoria in the nineteenth century, and Victoria has never left English use since. Tori is the American short form of that name, standing beside Vicky and Vickie, and it took on independent life on birth certificates over the second half of the twentieth century — a moment when many parents were choosing the nickname outright rather than the long form. The same shortening habit gave English Beth, Kate and Tess.
Meaning
"victory" — through Victoria
Victoria is the Latin word for victory, and Tori is its clipped form. Two other roads exist alongside it: in Norway, Tori appears as a variant of Tora, from the god-name Thor, and in Japanese, tori is an unrelated word for bird. In American records the Victoria route is by far the main one.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tori went to 167 girls in 2025, but Tory and Torri are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 194, which makes it the 766th most-given girls’ name of the year — 568 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 8,285 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,624 for Tori itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Vicky test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tori's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vicky climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vicky's path sketches the road Tori is walking now.
Tori sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, and pronounced correctly on first sight by English speakers — no coaching required.
- Comes with a formal long form already built: Victoria on the birth certificate gives a full-dress option for a signature or a diploma.
- Belongs to a documented line running back to a Latin word, so the meaning is plain and not guesswork.
- Has cousins in most European languages — Victoria, Vittoria, Viktoriya — which travel well.
- The sound has several accepted spellings — Tori, Torie, Torri, Tory — so expect to spell it out fairly often, even though your version is the most common one.
- Spoken aloud, it is indistinguishable from Tory, the British Conservative party nickname and, in American history, a Revolutionary-era Loyalist. Rarely an issue in daily life, but worth knowing it is there.
- It reads as a nickname to some ears. If you want the option of a longer formal name, Victoria has to be the one on the paperwork.
- It is well represented among adults today and thinner in current classrooms — which means a child named Tori will likely be the only one in her year, and will meet grown women who share it.
