The story of Torri
Victoria was rare in English until a queen carried it for most of the nineteenth century, and after that it was everywhere. The short forms followed: Vicky and Vic from the front, Tori and Torri from the back. Taking the back half is the less English of the two moves, and it may owe something to Italian, which habitually shortens Vittoria that way. The doubled r and the bare i are both American: the r keeps the vowel short and the i signaled, for a while, that the name belonged to a daughter.

It was also a goddess — the Roman equivalent of the Greek Nike, and she stood on coins and arches all over the empire before she was anybody's name. So the word was a deity and an abstraction long before it became personal, which is unusual: most name meanings are descriptions, and this one is a divine personification of a thing that happens.
