Samadhi
Feminine · “meditative absorption”
Samadhi is a Sanskrit word before it is a name — the eighth and final limb of Patanjali's yoga, the state of complete absorption. It has been said aloud in Sanskrit and Pali recitation for well over two thousand years, and in English it arrives already half-familiar, since the same word sits in yoga studios and meditation manuals. Four syllables, all open vowels, with the stress landing softly in the middle.
How old is the name Samadhi?
Samadhi first appears in US birth records in 2004 — 21 years ago. Samadhi is overwhelmingly a brand-new baby name right now — most Samadhis are still in diapers. About 900 people named Samadhi are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Samadhi
Samādhi is a term of art in the Indian religious traditions. It appears in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as the last of the eight limbs of practice, and in the Pali Buddhist canon as sammā-samādhi, the final step of the Noble Eightfold Path. In South Asia the same word also names the memorial shrine built over the resting place of a revered figure. As a personal name it is well established in Sri Lanka for girls, and its appearance in United States records is recent — it belongs to the broader movement of Sanskrit vocabulary into English through yoga and Buddhist practice over the last several decades.
Meaning
meditative absorption, deep concentration; literally 'putting together'
From Sanskrit samādhi, built from sam- ('together') plus ā- and the root dhā ('to place, to put'). The literal sense of gathering or bringing together underlies the technical one: a mind collected into one point.

Pronouncing Samadhi
suh-MAH-dee
English speakers familiar with the yoga term usually stress the second syllable. In Sanskrit and Pali the final consonant is an aspirated dh, closer to 'dhee', and some families keep a lighter stress on the first syllable: SAH-mah-dhee. Both are heard in the US.

The Michala test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Samadhi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Michala climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Michala's path sketches the road Samadhi is walking now.

The trade-off
- A precise, documented meaning in a living scriptural language — no guesswork about where it comes from or what it says.
- Already recognizable to anyone who has spent time around yoga or Buddhist practice, so it is rarely met as a total blank.
- Ready-made English short forms in Sam and Sammy, both long established and needing no explanation.
- Spelled the way it sounds once the stress is known, with no silent letters or competing spellings in circulation.
- Used as a given name in Sri Lanka as well as the US, so it travels without becoming a different name.
- Very few peers: a child with this name will almost certainly be the only one in her school, which means introducing and often spelling it out for teachers, coaches and doctors' offices for life.
- The word carries real religious weight in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and in South Asia it also names the shrine over a revered person's resting place. Some people will hear that association first, which is worth knowing rather than discovering later.
- Stress placement is unsettled in American English, so she may hear both suh-MAH-dee and SAH-muh-dee and end up correcting one of them.
- Almost everyone carrying it now is young, so for a while it will read as a distinctly new name — a passing condition rather than a permanent one.
