Michala
Feminine · “who is like God”
Michala is one letter away from a woman's name in the Hebrew Bible, and that name is not the feminine of Michael. Michal was Saul's daughter and David's first wife, and her name is a separate Hebrew word that happens to look almost identical. She is one of the few characters in the books of Samuel given an interior life, and what she is given it for is contempt.

The story of Michala
The scene is short and it is the only one most readers remember. David is bringing the ark into Jerusalem, dancing in front of it in a linen garment, and his wife watches from a window and despises him in her heart. When he comes home she tells him what she thought of the display, he answers her, and the narrator adds a single flat sentence about her having no children to the day of her death. That is all. The text does not explain her, does not soften her, and does not take her side, but it does something it almost never does for a woman in that book, which is tell you what she was thinking before she said anything. It is one of the earliest interior moments in Western literature and it is given to somebody the story is about to discard.

who is like God
If the name is read as a feminine of Michael, the Hebrew behind it is a question: who is like God. If it is read as the biblical Michal with a vowel added, the derivation is disputed and may be a different word entirely, possibly a shortened form of a different sentence-name. Reference works do not agree, and the single letter between the two spellings is not enough to decide.

Fashion outlook
Michala sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It keeps the ch that the k-spellings of this family abandoned, which is closer to the source.
- The sound is completely familiar even though the spelling is not.
- It is a genuine Czech form as well, which gives it a real life outside American naming.
- At least six spellings of this sound are in circulation and yours is among the rarer ones.
- It sits one letter from a biblical name with a difficult story attached.
- The ch will be read as a ch rather than a k by people meeting it cold.
