Liya
Feminine · Hebrew roots · “Either a form of Leah”
Four letters, two vowels, and a very long line behind it: Liya is how the biblical name Leah comes out in Russian, in Amharic, and in modern Israeli spelling. It arrived in American records recently and quietly, and it is still mostly carried by children rather than adults. Said aloud it is almost all vowel — nothing in it to catch on.
How old is the name Liya?
Liya first appears in US birth records in 1992 — 33 years ago. The typical Liya is a kid of about 9 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,400 people named Liya are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Liya
The oldest layer is Leah, the elder daughter of Laban in Genesis, a name carried into Greek by the translators of the Hebrew Bible and into Latin as Lia. From Latin and Greek scripture it spread into the Slavic and Ethiopian churches, where Лия and ልያ became ordinary women's names — and both are written Liya in the Latin alphabet. Separately, Hebrew speakers in the twentieth century built short names on the pattern li- plus a syllable for God, and Liya fits that mold exactly. The American history of the spelling is short: it belongs to the last few decades, and the people carrying it here are young.

Either a form of Leah, or Hebrew "God is mine"
Two serious readings sit behind the same spelling. As a transliteration of Russian Лия or Amharic ልያ, it is simply Leah — a Hebrew name whose own meaning has never been settled, argued over as "weary" and as an Akkadian word for wild cow. In modern Hebrew naming it also reads as li (to me) plus Yah (God), the same construction that gives Liel, Lior and Liron. Both are genuine; which one applies depends on the family.

Pronouncing Liya
LEE-uh
Two syllables, stress on the first. Hebrew, Russian and Amharic speakers often say lee-YAH, with the weight on the second syllable and the y sounded — both are correct for this name, so it is worth deciding which one you will use and repeating it.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Liya went to 165 girls in 2025, but Lia, Liah and Lya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,971, which makes it the 163rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,178 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 815 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,741 for Liya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Shilo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Liya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shilo climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shilo's path sketches the road Liya is walking now.
Liya is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Short, phonetic and spelled as it sounds once heard — four letters, no silent parts.
- The same spelling is already a real name in Hebrew, Russian, Amharic and, as Lia, in Italian and Portuguese.
- Stands behind Leah, a name in continuous use since the Book of Genesis.
- Needs no nickname to be usable, but yields Li and Lia if one is wanted.
- It sits in a crowded neighborhood of look-alikes: Lia, Leah, Lea, Leia and Lila. Expect to spell it aloud often, and to correct the occasional Leah.
- Two pronunciations circulate — LEE-uh and lee-YAH — and relatives on different sides of a family may not land on the same one.
- The meaning depends on which tradition you claim, so there is no single tidy answer to give a curious child later. Some parents find that a richer inheritance than a fixed definition.
