Liah
Feminine · Hebrew roots
Liah is two open syllables with nothing hard in them — a name you can say across a playground and still say gently at bedtime. It sits at the meeting point of several long-traveled names: Leah from the Hebrew Bible, Lia as Italians and Portuguese have long shortened Rosalia and Amalia, and the -iah ending shared with Mariah and Aaliyah. Short as it is, it arrives already recognizable.
How old is the name Liah?
Liah first appears in US birth records in 1979 — 46 years ago. The typical Liah is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,700 people named Liah are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Liah
The name behind most Liahs is Leah, carried out of Genesis into Greek as Leia by the translators of the Hebrew Bible and then through Latin into every European language that read scripture. Alongside it, and partly independent of it, Italian and Portuguese speakers have used Lia for centuries as the clipped end of Rosalia, Amalia and Giulia. Liah is the American spelling that splits the difference — Lia with an h borrowed back from Leah, and an ending that also rhymes it with Mariah and Aaliyah. It is a young spelling in the US record, and its wearers are still mostly children.
Meaningscholars disagree
Depends on the longer name behind it — usually read through Leah, whose own meaning is disputed
Read as a form of Leah, the Hebrew name of Jacob's first wife in Genesis, the meaning is argued two ways: from the Hebrew root la'ah, 'weary', or from an Akkadian word for 'cow', a compliment in a herding society and a match for her sister Rachel's 'ewe'. Read instead as the Italian and Portuguese Lia, it is simply the tail of a longer name — Rosalia, Amalia, Giulia — and carries no meaning of its own. Both roads are real, and Liah does not choose between them.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Liah went to 169 girls in 2025, but Lia, Liya and Lya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,971, which makes it the 163rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,155 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 815 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,510 for Liah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Doreatha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Liah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Doreatha climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Doreatha's path sketches the road Liah is walking now.
Liah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, and phonetic in English — most people get it right on the first attempt.
- Recognizable everywhere without being common: Lia, Lea and Léa are in steady use across Italy, Portugal, France and Germany.
- Already a complete name, so it needs no nickname, and offers Lia and Lee if one is wanted.
- Pairs easily with long or consonant-heavy surnames, and works at every age from crib to résumé.
- Leah, Lia, Lea and Léa are all live spellings in the US, so this one will be spelled aloud fairly often. Most people with short names make peace with that early.
- Expect an occasional LY-ah from someone reading it cold, and a French or German speaker reaching for LAY-ah.
- She is likely to be the only Liah in her school, which cuts both ways: no last-initial in class, but also no ready-made spelling that teachers already know.
