Jaylah
Feminine
Jaylah is a young name, made in America out of pieces English speakers already know: the bright Jay- opening and the soft -lah landing that Layla and Kayla share. It arrived on the national charts in the early 1990s, rose through the 2000s, and has been easing back since — long enough to be familiar, recent enough that most of its bearers are still children or teenagers.

The story of Jaylah
Jaylah belongs to a family of names built rather than inherited — American coinages that pair the Jay- opening with a soft feminine ending, and that appeared together in the records of the early 1990s alongside Jayla, Jaylin and Jaylee. Its two halves are both long-established in English naming: Jay has served as a given name and a short form for generations, and the -la ending had already been made popular by Kayla and Layla. In 2016 the name reached a wider audience when Star Trek Beyond gave it to a major character — a coinage the film's writers drew from the initials of the actress Jennifer Lawrence. By then the name was already well established with American parents, particularly in California, Texas and Florida.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No settled etymology. Jaylah is a modern American formation rather than a word inherited from an older language, so there is no original meaning to recover. What is documented is its shape: the Jay- element that begins Jayden, Jaylen and Jayce, and the -la/-lah ending shared with Layla, Kayla and Mikayla.
Pronouncing Jaylah
JAY-luh
Two syllables, stress on the first. The final -h is silent; some families give the ending a fuller JAY-lah, which is why the spelling with -h exists at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaylah went to 169 girls in 2025, but Jayla, Jailah and Jaila and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 777, which makes it the 383rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 935 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,069 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,510 for Jaylah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Randi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaylah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Randi climbed just as high around 1982, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Randi's path sketches the road Jaylah is walking now.
Jaylah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for English speakers — the Jay- and -la parts are both familiar from names already in wide use.
- Comes with a ready-made short form in Jay, which works in full adulthood as well as childhood.
- Rare enough in any given school that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Sits comfortably beside the very common Jayden and Jayla generation without being one of them.
- The spelling competes with Jayla, Jaila, Jaela and Jaylah itself, and all four sound identical. Expect to spell it out often, and expect forms to come back with the -h missing.
- There is no inherited meaning to offer if the name's meaning is asked about later. Some parents like that blank page; others would rather have an answer ready.
- Its whole rise happened within the last few decades, so it reads as clearly of one generation rather than as a name that has come and gone before.
