Doreatha respells a Greek compound and hides the seam. The original is two words, a gift and a god, joined in the middle; this version puts its extra letters exactly where the join is, so that a reader looking for the halves cannot find them.

Where it comes from

The story of Doreatha

The saint the name belongs to is remembered for a basket. In the legend, Dorothea of Caesarea is on her way to execution in February when a lawyer named Theophilus mocks her, telling her to send him fruit and flowers from the garden of paradise she is so confident of reaching. After her death a child appears at his door with a basket of roses and apples, out of season and out of nowhere, and the lawyer is converted on the spot and executed in his turn. The story is late and almost certainly fiction, and it produced a genuinely beautiful iconography: the saint is painted holding a basket, and the roses in February are the whole point.

Meaning

Gift of God

Greek doron, a gift, and theos, God. The same two elements make Theodore in the other order, which is one of the neater facts in European naming. The spelling here breaks the compound at a point that corresponds to nothing in the Greek, which is normal for a respelling and worth pointing out, since it makes the meaning harder to see rather than easier.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The standard spelling has four and puts the weight on the third, so this version is genuinely shorter rather than merely differently written.

Doreatha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1928, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Doreatha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is recognizable across German, Italian, Spanish and Polish.
  • Dot and Thea are two short forms a century apart in flavor.
  • The meaning is transparent, positive and easy to give a child in three words.
What to consider
  • Dorothea and Doretha are both commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The respelling obscures the compound, so the meaning has to be explained rather than seen.
  • It is strongly dated to the early twentieth century in American records.
