Ours, offered as ours. Tóraí meant a dispossessed Irishman living as a bandit, and English partisans in the 1670s threw the word at their opponents as an insult; the opponents took it up and it named a political party for three hundred years. Whig came from a Scottish word for a cattle thief the same way. Two of Britain's great parties were named by their enemies and kept the insults, which is a genuinely good piece of political history.
