Wryhta was the general Old English word for someone who makes things and it produced a whole set of trade names — wheelwright, cartwright, shipwright, millwright, arkwright — each of which became a surname. The plain Wright meant a carpenter or joiner. It is among the commonest English surnames. Its use as a given name appears in American records around 1900, often after the aviation brothers.
