The story of Thornton
Old English had two letters for the th sound, thorn and eth, borrowed and adapted from runic and Irish writing. Both were lost when English printing was established with type cut on the Continent, where neither existed. Scribes had already been writing thorn in a form that looked like a y, and printers used a y where the letter was needed, producing the abbreviations ye for the and yt for that. Antiquarian revival in the nineteenth century read those y spellings literally and invented the pronunciation yee olde, which no English speaker has ever used naturally. Icelandic kept the letter. Thornton as an American given name peaks in 1888.
