The story of Taji
Persian supplied the vocabulary of court, poetry and administration across an enormous area, and the crown word traveled with it. Arabic took tāj and used it in compound names and titles. Swahili, whose lexicon is roughly a third Arabic, took it again on the East African coast. Urdu took it directly, and the Mughal court, which conducted its business in Persian, used it throughout. Turkish has taç. So a single Persian noun is a live word in languages spoken from Zanzibar to Istanbul to Dhaka, in every case arriving as a loan from a court culture rather than by descent.
