Where it comes from

The story of Sy

The Seymour family descended from the Norman lords of Saint-Maur and became one of the great English families of the Tudor period: Jane Seymour was Henry VIII's third queen and the mother of Edward VI, and her brother Edward ruled as Lord Protector. That prominence carried the surname into use as a given name in the nineteenth century, and it was adopted widely by American Jewish families in the early twentieth as an English-sounding name beginning with the same sound as a Hebrew one — a common practice, alongside Sidney for Shmuel and Milton for Moshe. Sy is the clip that resulted, and the American figures peak in 1982.

From Saint-Maur, a French place name; or a clip of Simon

Seymour is from Saint-Maur in Normandy, named for Saint Maurus, a sixth-century disciple of Benedict; Maurus is Latin for a Moor or a dark-skinned man. Sy also clips Simon and Sylvester, and in Jewish-American use it frequently stands for Seymour or Sidney. Which fuller name lies behind an individual bearer varies entirely by family.

Sy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sy went to 10 boys in 2025, but Cy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 62, which makes it the 866th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,813 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 27,550 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Sy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two letters and one syllable, impossible to mispronounce.
  • It has a documented Norman and Tudor history behind it.
  • It functions as its own nickname.
What to consider
  • Two-letter given names are frequently rejected by forms and databases.
  • It reads as a nickname for a longer name most people cannot supply.
  • Cy is a competing spelling of the same sound.
