Sabino
Masculine · “Latin "a Sabine”
A lost language is visible inside Latin, and the Sabines are one source of it. Latin words like lupus, a wolf, and bos, an ox, show sound changes Latin itself does not make — they are borrowings from neighboring Italic dialects, Sabine among them, absorbed as Rome absorbed its neighbors.

The story of Sabino
Linguists identify Sabine and other Italic loans in Latin by their sound correspondences: Latin regularly turns an inherited kw into qu and a p into p, so words that show different outcomes are suspected borrowings. Lupus should have been luquus; bos should have been vos. Roman writers themselves noted Sabine words, and a handful are recorded directly. The Sabines occupy a founding role in Rome's own mythology — the abduction of the Sabine women and the subsequent merger of the two peoples — which is a story about assimilation told by the assimilating side. Sabino is standard in Italy and Spain; the American figures peak in 1938.
Meaning
Latin "a Sabine"
From Sabinus, a member of the Sabine people, who lived in the hills north-east of Rome and were absorbed into the Roman state in the third century BC. Sabine belonged to the Osco-Umbrian branch of Italic, related to Latin but distinct. The name is an ethnonym, like Judith for a Judean or Frank for a Frank, and became an ordinary Roman family name and then a Christian one.

Sabino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aram climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aram's path sketches the road Sabino is walking now.
