Rosalin
Feminine · “Germanic”
Rosalin looks like it means beautiful rose and almost certainly does not. Rosalind is a Germanic name built from hros, a horse, and lind, either soft or a shield of lime wood — and Spanish speakers later reinterpreted it through rosa linda, lovely rose. The flower is a later reading laid over something much older.

The story of Rosalin
The Visigoths carried Germanic names into Spain, and Rosalind is one of them; the reinterpretation as rosa linda happened there, where the two Germanic elements happened to resemble two Spanish words. English received the name from Spanish literature and from Shakespeare, who used Rosalind in As You Like It and Rosaline in two other plays. American use peaked in the early twentieth century, and Rosalin without the final d or e appeared alongside Rosalyn and Rosalind, peaking in 1923.
Meaningscholars disagree
Germanic, probably "horse" plus "soft" or "shield"
The standard derivation takes Rosalind from Old High German hros, horse, and lind, which meant soft or gentle and also named the linden wood used for shields. Both elements are common in Germanic names. The Spanish reading as rosa linda, beautiful rose, is a folk reinterpretation from the Middle Ages onward — a genuine and old one, but a reinterpretation. Some Rosalins may instead be Rosaline, a separate Norman form.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Rosalin went to 15 girls in 2025, but Rosalyn, Rosalynn and Rozalyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 401, which makes it the 589th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,544 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,008 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Rosalin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
