Rosalind came to England with the Normans and Shakespeare gave it to the heroine of As You Like It, who spends most of the play disguised as a man. American families produced Rosalyn, Rosalynn and Rosaline as respellings. Rosalynn Carter, first lady from 1977, carried this spelling, which is in current use.
